History of Milldale CT
Milldale, CT at one time was a busy industrial center, known for its many milling factories and their goods. Named after the mills that were built in the 19th century, the Quinnipiac River supplied the water needed to power the mills. Paper, cotton and woolen goods were the main products, and their high demand during the Industrial Revolution kept the town profitable. In addition to the mills, Milldale was also home to various metal, rubber and textile factories.
The Quinnipiac River provided the water power necessary to power the mills and factories. The river is an off shoot of New Haven Harbor and flows through the middle of Milldale. It was also once used for transporting goods downstream to the New Haven Harbor where they were later shipped throughout the United States. Today, the river provides recreational opportunities for residents and tourists alike.
Milldale’s manufacturing history can still be glimpsed village’s architecture and landmarks. Many of the old mill buildings have been converted into offices, apartments and shops. The Linear Trail, which runs next to the Quinnipiac River features many of these adored and repurposed historic properties.
